    2022 Atlantic Hurricane Names List

Below is the list of hurricane names for the 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season. The Atlantic Hurricane names lists are used in rotation and re-cycled every six years, i.e., the 2022 list will be used again in 2028.

The only time that there is a change in the list is if a storm is so deadly or costly that the future use of its name on a different storm would be inappropriate for reasons of sensitivity.

If a storm forms in the off-season, it will take the next name in the list based on the current calendar date. For example, if a tropical cyclone formed on December 28th, it would take the name from the previous season’s list of names. If a storm formed in February, it would be named from the subsequent season’s list of names.

Prior to 2021, if more than twenty-one named tropical cyclones occur in the Atlantic basin in a season, additional storms would take names from the Greek alphabet.

However, after the very active 2020 season where Greek names were used, the naming process changed and there is now an alternate names list for every hurricane season in the event more than 21 storms forms.

    How Are Hurricanes Named?

During World War II, the practice of naming storms became widespread in weather map discussions among forecasters, especially Army and Navy meteorologists who plotted the movements of storms over the wide expanses of the Pacific Ocean.

In 1953, the United States abandoned a confusing two-year-old plan to name storms by a phonetic alphabet (Able, Baker, Charlie) when a new, international phonetic alphabet was introduced. That year, the United States began using female names for storms.

The practice of naming hurricanes solely after women came to an end in 1978 when men’s and women’s names were included in the Eastern North Pacific storm lists.

In 1979, male and female names were included in lists for the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico where two male names were only used once and then retired, David and Frederic.

  • February 2021 Full Moon Tonight Is A Snow Moon

The Full Moon tonight is a Snow Moon because Full Moons in February are named Snow Moons.

What Time Does The February 2021 Snow Moon Occur?

On Florida’s east coast, the Snow Moon will rise over the Atlantic Ocean around 5:50 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on the night of Friday, February 26, 2021, and set the following morning around 7:16 a.m., with some slight time variation (+/- 20 minutes) depending on the viewer’s exact location in Florida.

The Snow Moon will be technically at its fullest at 3:19 a.m. on Saturday morning with 99.8% illumination.

When is the best time to watch February’s Full Moon?

Low hanging moons near the horizon appear larger to humans.

So, the Snow Moon will appear biggest to the naked eye on the U.S east coast during and just after the moonrise.

Why is February’s Full Moon Named a Snow Moon?

According to the Farmer’s Almanac, Native Americans named February’s Full Moon a Snow Moon due to the heavy snowfall that occurs in the northeastern United States this time of year.

Other February Full Moon names include Storm Moon, Hunger Moon, Magha Purnima, Magha Puja, the Mahamuni Pagoda Festival Moon, the Chinese Lantern Festival Moon, and the Full Moon of Tu B’Shevat.

  • NASA Finds Valentine’s Day Rose In Space

This image of a planetary nebula, which may suggest a rose to some, was obtained with the wide-field view of the National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO) Mosaic 1 camera on the Mayall 4-meter telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory.’

Sh2-174 is an unusual ancient planetary nebula. A planetary nebula is created when a low-mass star blows off its outer layers at the end of its life. The core of the star remains and is called a white dwarf.

Usually, the white dwarf can be found very near the center of the planetary nebula. But in the case of Sh2-174 it is off to the right (It is the very blue star near the center of the blue gas).

This asymmetry is due to the planetary nebula’s interaction with the interstellar medium that surrounds it.

The image was generated by Travis Rector (University of Alaska Anchorage) from observations taken through four different filters which are assigned colors that approximate what the human eye can see: B (blue), I (orange), Hydrogen-alpha (red) and Oxygen [OIII] (blue) filters. In this image, North is up, East is to the left.

  • NASA Finds Valentine’s Day Heart In Space

PASADENA, California — NASA dubbed the above heart-shaped interstellar image a ‘Celestial Valentine.’

Generations of stars can be seen in this infrared portrait from NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope. In this wispy star-forming region, called W5, the oldest stars can be seen as blue dots in the centers of the two hollow cavities (other blue dots are background and foreground stars not associated with the region).

Younger stars line the rims of the cavities, and some can be seen as pink dots at the tips of the elephant-trunk-like pillars. The white knotty areas are where the youngest stars are forming. Red shows heated dust that pervades the region’s cavities, while green highlights dense clouds.

  • Portuguese Man-o-War Jellyfish Invade Florida Beaches

WEST PALM BEACH, Florida – Recent southeasterly winds have been blowing Portuguese Man-of-War, also known as Blue Bottles, onto the popular tourist beaches on Florida’s east coast during the last two weeks.

The manowar jellyfish appear to be most heavily concentrated on the east coast in South Florida and Central Florida, according to social media reports and photos (technically, Portuguese Man-of-War aren’t blue jellyfish but are instead a colony of small organisms called Siphonophorae).

Often, the Portuguese Man-of-War become entangled in the seaweed which makes it harder for beachgoers to see the stinging marine life before it is too late.

The Portuguese Man-of-War can be identified from other jellyfish in Florida by its translucent blue and purple gas-filled air sac that helps them travel long distances across the ocean by acting as a wind-driven sail.

A stinging tentacle cluster mass under the body can have tentacles that may extend up to ten or fifteen feet which captures small prey such as fish.

    Jellyfish Sting Remedy

Rinse the area of the jellyfish sting with vinegar.

Do not rinse the area with fresh water because that will make the stingers fire more venom into the victim.

Sometimes, the tentacles will remain stuck to the skin and it will help to physically remove them as soon as possible from the victim with tweezers.

If tweezers are unavailable, use a gloved hand, towel, or dull edge of a plastic card.

Most jellyfish stings, although extremely intense, are relatively minor and will subside after a few minutes.

If you encounter a jellyfish sting that results in fainting, shortness of breath, chest pain, scratchy throat, or hives that occur on the skin in areas away from the site of the sting; these symptoms may be indicative of a more severe reaction. You should immediately call 911 and contact the nearest lifeguard if possible.
